Container Handling Services

Solent Stevedores provides a wide range of container handling services at our Rail Terminal at the Port of Southampton, and will shortly be opening an empty container facility at London Gateway

Situated less than half a mile from the second biggest Container Port in the UK, Solent Stevedores operates the state-of-the-art 109 Rail Terminal in the Western Docks at the Port of Southampton, providing a vital logistics link for the Rail Freight Industry.

Rail Terminal Services

The rail terminal at the Port of Southampton efficiently handles some 1,200 rail services annually, transferring approximately 60,000 import and export containers between DP World Southampton and rail terminals nationwide.

A recent project between Associated British Ports, Solent Stevedores, and DB Cargo saw a £2.4 million upgrade to the infrastructure of the facility. The project was completed in May 2017 and has transformed the rail freight operation allowing room for future expansion.

The new layout of the 6.5 acre rail terminal is designed not only to maximise opportunities for transfer of cargoes to and from dedicated container trains, but also to offer facilities for project cargoes and the handling of ‘Out of Gauge’ cargoes. In an industry first, the upgrade included the construction of a raised platform extending out from the existing yard to the rail lines, giving a completely level surface on which to operate. This allows the Terminal’s Container Handling Equipment to access all 3 rail lines.

This new development has been coupled with further investment from Solent Stevedores of £2million on state-of-the-art handling equipment; including 3 brand new Kalmar Reach Stackers as well as a new fleet of Terminal Tugs and Dennison Trailers, and £50,000 on a new bespoke high volume train refuelling facility.

Solent Stevedores are responsible for servicing 4 container trains a day for DB Cargo with services going to Birch Coppice, Barry, Trafford Park, Wakefield and Burton.

The recent upgrade of the facility has allowed Solent Stevedores to dramatically improve the efficiency of this operation resulting in a reduction of turnaround times by 50%.

In addition Solent Stevedores offer container shunting services throughout the Port Estate, laden and empty Container Storage, and container maintenance and repair services.
