2013 promises to be a record year for Southamption Cruise Trade

Carnival Cruise - Port of SouthamptonSolent Stevedores is looking forward to a record year in 2013 as the company's successful involvement in the growing Southampton cruise trade continues apace.

During 2013 Solent Stevedores' dedicated cruise staff, operating out of ABP Port of Southampton's four cruise terminals, are scheduled to handle a total of just under 300 separate vessel calls. Of these, 286 calls will be Carnival Group vessels comprising 171 P & O ships, 59 Cunard Line, 34 Princess Cruises, 18 Aida Cruises and 4 Holland America Line.

The total gross tonnage of all the Carnival Group ships will be just under 25 million gt!!!, an average of over 87,000 gt per vessel, equivalent to twice the size of the infamous 'Titanic', the largest class of ship built 100 years ago. These modern luxury liners have an average lower berth accommodation of 2,290 passengers with the largest capacity vessels, 'Ventura' and 'Royal Princess'  able to accommodate 3,600 passengers, plus up to 1,500 crew.

So for the Carnival brands alone, Solent Stevedores will be helping transfer over 1.3 million passengers as well as approximately two million pieces of individual cabin baggage safely on and off ship.

It is now a regular occurrence for up to 4 cruise ships to be handled by Solent Stevedores on a given day, requiring the employment of over 200 staff to assist passengers and baggage and transfer hundreds of tonnes of ships stores and equipment. This takes a substantial amount of commitment, skill and pre-planning by the dedicated Solent Stevedores team, all of whom  take great pride in their work and ongoing achievements.

In recent times cruise ships have become bigger in every way, but despite this increased challenge, vessel turnaround times are now much quicker than in the past with less than 10 hours from arrival to departure now becoming the Southampton standard.

The ABP port of Southampton is the largest cruise port in northern Europe, by some margin, and the Solent Stevedores team is proud to be associated with such an outstanding success story.
