Solent Stevedores welcomes an additional daily intermodal rail service from rail freight operator GB Railfreight at its Rail Terminal at the Port of Southampton.
This fourth daily service from GBRf will operate from the Port of Southampton to East Midlands Gateway running five days a week.
Following a significant partnership investment between ABP and Solent Stevedores last year, the terminal located close to international shipping lanes has increased capacity and efficiency turning around eight intermodal container trains each day. The terminal has the capacity to handle 180,000 containers each year.
Tom Dynes, Director at Solent Stevedores said:
“We’re really pleased to bring an additional rail service from GBRf and to be welcoming an increase in trade passing through our Terminal during these current uncertain times.
“Providing the infrastructure to encourage freight off the roads and putting it on to rail is a big part of our long-term plan to contribute towards improved air quality in the area and this announcement further strengthens our position as a UK leading rail freight operator.”
John Bailey, Managing Director – Intermodal and Terminals at Maritime Transport said:
“We are thrilled to be kicking off the next chapter of our intermodal journey; to provide UK businesses with even more ways of moving their goods from A to B at a time when the country begins its return to a new normal.
“We are incredibly proud of what our drivers and staff have achieved in such a short space of time; meeting our customers’ needs and unique requirements is at the very heart of what we do, and we look forward to providing additional services in the near future.
Solent Stevedores operates in a key strategic position for international shipping of dry bulk and cargo to and from the UK.
